Industry-Specific Web Design

Most websites are built to look acceptable. Ours are built to hold up, perform under pressure, and quietly outperform the strongest competitor in your space. That usually means removing unnecessary complexity, fixing structural issues, and building a system that behaves the way your business actually operates.

If You’re Here, It’s Probably Because:

  • Your site works, but feels a step behind your competitors.
  • It’s slower or more fragile than you’re comfortable with.
  • You’ve outgrown the theme or builder it was originally built on.
  • Different parts of the site don’t quite fit together anymore.
  • You suspect there’s a better way to do this, but can’t quite see it yet.

We build systems that feel steady, perform cleanly, and give you an edge where it actually matters.

Request a Site Architecture Review

If your site feels a little off, or a little heavier than it should be, we’ll walk through what’s actually going on and where the leverage points are. No vague advice. Just clear technical priorities.

You’ll speak directly with a senior developer. No sales layer. Just a straight look at the system.

Industry-Specific Web Design (Built to Fit, Not Forced to Fit)

Most websites start the same way. Pick a theme. Add some plugins. Adjust things until it sort of looks right.

It works… for a while. Then the cracks show. Pages get slower. Features don’t quite behave. Updates feel risky. The whole thing starts to feel like a house where every room was added at a different time by a different contractor.

We don’t build that way.

We start with how your business actually runs. How people find you. What they need to do. What’s happening behind the scenes. Then we build a system that fits that reality instead of fighting it.

For Portland businesses, that usually means less bulk and more discipline. Fewer moving parts. Cleaner structure. A site that feels steady instead of fragile.

The Cost of Generic Builds (It’s Not Just Speed)

Mass-market themes try to do everything. Ecommerce, portfolios, memberships, events, all bundled together whether you need them or not.

That code doesn’t just sit there quietly. It loads. It runs. It gets in the way.

The result is a site that feels like it’s dragging a trailer full of stuff you never unpacked.

We come in and cut that weight down. Not aggressively, just deliberately. Keep what serves the business. Remove what doesn’t.

Once that happens, everything else gets easier. Faster pages. Simpler updates. Fewer surprises.

What Industry-Specific Actually Means

It means your site behaves like your business.

A law firm needs clarity and trust. A retailer needs speed and frictionless checkout. A healthcare provider has to think about privacy and compliance from the beginning.

Trying to force all of that into the same template is where things break down.

We align the architecture, performance, and workflows with what your business actually needs to do.

E-commerce Systems (When Revenue Is on the Line)

WooCommerce is powerful. It’s also unforgiving if it’s put together casually.

  • Stores that slow down as orders increase
  • Checkout flows that fail in edge cases
  • Inventory systems that drift out of sync
  • Subscriptions that feel like they might break

That’s not a platform problem. It’s an architecture problem.

We clean that up so the system behaves the way it should.

Security (Not a Plugin Stack)

Security isn’t something you bolt on at the end.

We don’t stack plugins and hope for coverage. That approach usually adds noise and misses the real risks.

We focus on:

  • Server-level controls
  • Clean, predictable code
  • Fewer dependencies
  • Tested updates

Simple, but done properly.

Performance (Where Small Problems Get Expensive)

Slow sites don’t fail loudly. They just lose people.

Performance comes from how the system is built:

  • Database structure
  • Query efficiency
  • Asset loading
  • Caching that actually works

Get those right and the site feels fast. Miss them and it never quite does.

Technical SEO (Built In)

Search engines are reading structure, not guessing intent.

We build for that:

  • Clear hierarchy
  • Clean markup
  • Logical internal linking
  • Fast load times

Nothing fancy. Just correct.

Maintenance vs. Ongoing Care

Updates are part of it. Staying close to the system is the bigger part.

We still work with clients from 20+ years ago. That’s not typical. It comes from staying involved and keeping things running cleanly over time.

Built to Last

Your site should not need to be rebuilt every couple of years.

It should evolve. Clean code. No lock-in. Flexible enough to grow with your business.

You own it. We just make sure it holds up.

Ready to build something that quietly outperforms your competition?

Watermelon Web Works has been incredible to work with. They are patient, understanding, and quick to answer any questions (or emergencies) you might have. After switching over to them to help re-vamp our online retail store, we hired them to build our wholesale website as well. I can't recommend them enough - Thank you team!

My previous web developer who I was very happy with retired and I was pretty sad about it because it seems now days it is hard to hire a web developer close by with a good set of skills who is interested in helping small business at reasonable prices. Then I found Watermelon and I have been very happy. They are responsive, are able to solve problems, and work at reasonable prices.

We hired Watermelon to help us with our website. They were very thorough and took the time to explain in layman's terms what they were doing and how we could improve SEO and site functionality. We will definitely be back for future website needs!

Great work and amazing service! We're a non-profit, and our priorities are always focused on maintaining the Astoria Column. We had a website built by someone else a few years ago, but without regular updating and maintenance, sections of our site were no longer functional. Joanna and the rest of the team came in and had everything working within a week and it's been smooth sailing since then!

Watermelon Web Works did a great job creating a custom shopping cart page for our firm. Gavynn in particular was especially helpful and responsive. We appreciated the upfront costs and the technical competency of Watermelon Web Works and would not hesitate to work with the people there again.

I cannot say enough good things about Watermelon. They are terrific communicators, highly competent coders, and really, really nice people. They were instrumental in helping us to assemble a very usable, easily maintainable website for our organization. They' have demonstrated great flexibility in accommodating our evolving needs. They have been highly responsive to any technical issues, typically resolving them in less than 4 hours.
